(as part of the Ghanaian-German Centre for Development Studies and Health Research at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra) Funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) under the ‘Centres of Excellence for Teaching and Research to Train Future Leaders in Sub-Saharan Africa’-Initiative The Ghanaian-German Programme for Development Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, Accra Background Ghana is a developing country in West Africa that is currently experiencing some period of political stability and continuous economic development. Recent years have also seen an increase in governmental spending on education. While this is an encouraging development, the development of institutions of advanced education lags behind. Given this situation, the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) at the University of Ghana, Legon, and the Centre for Development Research (ZEF), at the University of Bonn, Germany have decided to liaise to establish a Programme for Development Studies that provides Ghanaian and other African PhD students in the field of development studies with advanced theoretical, methodological and leadership training. Capacity building, staff development, and the enhancement of ISSER infrastructure, will help to make the Programme for Development Studies at the University of Ghana, Legon, sustainable. |
